PORTAGE FOR YOUTH PROGRAMS
BRINGING THEATRE INTO THE SCHOOLS
Starting in 2010, The Portage for Youth/Mounds Theatre is kicking off their in-school
theatre/arts program, which is available to all local area schools.
The Portage for Youth/Mounds Theatre arts programming helps students explore who they truly are and can be. Theatre helps participants grow by encouraging creativity, cooperation with others, in achieving a joint goal, self-exploration and development of moral and spiritual values.
The objective is to conduct year round theatre workshops with students, meeting three times a week throughout the school year. The workshops will culminate with performances for peers, educators, family, friends and community.

The theatre workshops will draw upon a series of theatre games, creative writing exercises, as well as open dialogue with the students about the various social and emotional issues that they face at this moment in their lives. These discussions will fuel specific theme oriented activities such as improvisation, poetry, drawings and music that will be woven together in an original piece of theatre that we will create together.
It has been our experience with young people and theatre, that when students are allowed to truly speak their minds, not only do they feel validated, but the work that they create is more relevant and powerful, as it not only raises their sense of self worth, but also inspires their peers to do the same.
Theatre as a tool for exploring issues that they might not readily know how to articulate, has been proven an effective forum, for teaching life lessons, instilling a sense of confidence and moral responsibility in our young people, that can truly empower them. They come to realize that they really do have a say in their future and that what they do and say can actually change their individual lives, communities and ultimately the world.
