Coming February 2010

Interactive Dinner Theatre at the Mounds!

Beat the winter blues, take fake a sunny cruise!

“KNOTAREEL GETAWAY CRUISE”

The Historic Mounds Theatre in Saint Paul, is “LAUNCHING” it’s first interactive dinner theatre production, February 26 thru March 21.

Is Minnesota’s long, cold, snowy winter getting you down?  Are you dreaming about taking a cruise on one of those luxury ocean liners where the crew caters to your every whim?   Have you won the lottery lately?  If not, you can still experience a cruise on a not so luxury ocean liner, with a barely competent crew, and yet not have to risk shark attacks or bankruptcy.

“Knotareel Getaway Cruise” offers a midwinter getaway without ever leaving the state.  The production whisks audience members away aboard the pride of the Knotareel Cruise Line’s budget cruise fleet.

Join Captain Hinden “Ice” Berg and his motley crew for a sample of what an actual 3 to 7 day voyage on their ship would be like.  Frightening is one adjective that comes to mind.  Maybe the crewmembers don’t know their port from their starboard but they are great singers and dancers so they’ll keep you entertained.  Better yet, the food is first class even if the ship isn’t.

There is plenty of onboard entertainment to keep your mind from worrying about the little things in life, such as: Is this ship seaworthy? Is that frightening sound normal for a boat?  Will the crew abandon us in the middle of the ocean?

First up – karaoke, whether you like it or not.  But what would a cruise be without karaoke?  Probably not nearly as enjoyable if not performed by the crew in their own unique style, mangling the words to your favorite tunes.

Maybe you would prefer something more high class, something cultural, something like one of the greatest plays ever written.  Would you enjoy a shipboard production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”?  Who wouldn’t?  Unfortunately the actor playing Romeo is under the weather and has to be replaced at the last minute by Jack, the Engine Guy, who has never acted in a play in his life.  But fortunately Jack has a great singing voice which comes in handy considering the play’s many inappropriate musical numbers.  No, that isn’t the ship’s engine you’re hearing, it’s the Bard rapidly rotating in his grave.

After killing Romeo and Juliet, the characters as well as the play, the crew livens things up with a Dance Party consisting of the greatest dance numbers of all time.  Okay, maybe not the greatest but they at least rank in the top 100… or so.

Possibly classical music is more to your liking.  If so, you’re in luck.  The talented if not overly competent crew will treat you to a choral presentation of classic superhero TV theme songs.  Or if your taste is more modern, the ever-versatile Jack, the Engine Guy, will lead a rousing rap version of a nautically themed show tune.

Of course it isn’t all fun and games.  There are also lifeboat drills, engine malfunctions, and a sea monster.  And there is the possibility that the ship might be cursed.   Be that as it may, “Knotareel Getaway Cruise” will have you laughing, whether you’re a seasoned cruise ship vacationer or you’ve “never been”.

The production is written and directed by local actor/director/playwright, Greg Eiden ("War of the Worlds: The Musical",  "Rockin' at the Sock Hop").  Greg is the founder of Hometown Theatre and a familiar face with extensive local stage and musical theatre experience.

The historic Mounds Theatre is a lovely, renovated 1920’s vaudeville and silent movie theatre, located in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood of Saint Paul near Metropolitan State University.  The theatre is owned by the Portage for Youth, a nonprofit providing after-school arts, education and enrichment programs for youth, living in Saint Paul’s greater East Side neighborhoods.  The Mounds Theatre is home to Starting Gate Productions and a favorite perennial holiday production of the stage version of “A Christmas Story”.  The theatre also plays host to a number of community film, theatrical and performance events and activities.
